An unpublished as of Valerian II from Viminacium
Lot 837
Valerian II, Caesar, 256-258. As (Copper, 23 mm, 5.45 g, 12 h), Viminacium, 256-257. [P C L VALERIANVS NOB CAES] Bare-headed and draped bust of Valerian II to right, seen from behind. Rev. [IOVI CRESCENTI / S C] The young Jupiter seated facing, head to left, raising his right hand, riding goat to right. Cohen -. MIR -. RIC -. Unpublished and unique, an issue of great interest. Patina stripped and with some green deposits, otherwise, fine.

From the G.G. Collection of Roman Imperial third century middle bronzes.

This is an exciting and rather unexpected discovery, as the Iovi Crescenti type was hitherto unknown to have been struck in bronze. The coin belongs to the last emission of Viminacium, before the mint was transferred to Cologne in 257.
